Maverick and Unity performance issues
On some Mac's with OS X 10.9 Unity performance is very bad, including stuttering, editor freezes, editor lags and similar.
We found that there seems to be a leak in Maverick's OpenGL ARB VBO implementation.
Our text rendering creates and destroys a lot of VBO's so it is most likely that this happened after around 10 minutes of working with Unity and the inspector or other text heavy components in unity uploading a lot of geometry.
Terrains will be especially affected, but of course just loading a scene / unloading a scene will load / unload VBO's for all the meshes too.
This issue has been fixed with a workaround in 4.3.4. We are working with Apple to get a proper fix done, at which point we will be able to remove the workaround.

XCO, GMARK - are you on Unity 4.5.3 ? Upgraded to 4.5.3 and can report/confirm this issue as well.

I'm experiencing the same crashing issues using Mavericks 10.9.4 and Unity 4.3.4 up to version 4.5.3p2.
It usually is a resultant of running the application in editor multiple times, which seems to leak memory on my mac pro. The larger the scenes in terms of VBO's especially Terrain based systems cause crashes. In my case around 10 times a day perhaps more on a bad day.
I have also tried an empty unity project and attempted to re-produce. After starting approximately 50 times it crashes the same way. This problem has not been fixed and pertains still in Maverick based systems.

Freezing of the editor seems to have been resolved with 4.3.4 on Mavericks. In my projects, testing / debugging still has frame rate issues on Mavericks. 4.3.4 is much better overall, but still not comparable to performance on an earlier OS like Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion.

IKONRAD where did you get the patch or what did you do?

Yes, the performance is noticeably improved. It doesn't hang now and works like a charm. The only thing that still does not work is realtime debugging.

Is it fixed? I have been waiting to upgrade to Mavericks till I knew it was fixed. Can some of you please report back that the new update worked for fixing this problem and that it is now safe for the rest of us to upgrade to Mavericks or not? Thanks for the help! jim
