Game objects cannot be renamed if at least one game object in a scene has its layer manipulated
To reproduce:
1. Open the attached project
2. Open the scene
3. Select the game object called "try to rename me from hierarchy view (F2)"
4. Right-click on it and select rename
5. Cursor will briefly appear and then the selection will change colour from bluish to grey. Like if the focus was lost.

Same here with 2017.2f3.
As DRHOGAN said, this only appears in Scenes with many GameObjects

I am now experiencing this too. I can not rename from the hierarchy window. My workaround is to use the name field at the top of the inspector for each individual gameobject, the one next to the checkbox to enable or disable it.

I am having a very similar issue, in a single scene of my project (can't attach cause it's humungous). All the other scenes work well, and in that same scene (where for sure i also manipulate some layers if that might count) if i run in play mode, i can rename all the objects, if it's not in play mode, i have the same error mentioned in the bug.
