Creating a 2D project in project wizard on Mac does not set editor to 2D accordingly
1. create new project and select the 2D default option in the projectwizard
2. Observe how scene is not set to 2D and editor behaviour mode is not set to 2D either

I had this happen to me with Unity 4.3.4f1 on Mavericks 10.9.1 the first time I tried to create a 2D project. The editor was set to 3D and camera was set to perspective. On the second attempt, the 2D project was set up correctly.
