Regression
Yes
Editor does not save font asset "fallback Reference" properly, which prevents the fallback from working
To reproduce:
1. Open attached project "Font Fallback Test.zip"
2. Open "init" scene.
3. There are 4 different examples of text. 3rd example's Japanese text should be falling back just like in 1st and 4th example (3rd and 4th examples are the same, but the 4th one is fixed inside it's metafile)
Expected result: text should be falling back.
Actual result: text is not.
Reproducible: 5.5.0a6, 5.5.3p2, 5.6.1f1, 2017.1.0b5
Not reproducible: 5.4.5p1
Workaround:
1. Open open folder where project is saved, and go to Assets folder.
2. Open "KGNexttoMeSolid 1.ttf.meta" and "NotoSerifCJKjp-Regular.otf.meta" with a text editor.
3. Inside "KGNexttoMeSolid 1.ttf.meta" find line "- {fileID: 12800000, guid: 6edb13d0d9a4596488a91cdbd03e7050," and change it to "NotoSerifCJKjp-Regular.otf.meta" file's guid code. (e0e9cd4844406634caf1dca189c90906)
Note: Same result in standalone build.

Still persists in 5.6.3p3. Any chance of a 5.X fix?

Is there any area in Unity that works as expected without hiccups ? Seems like everything has some kind of problems here and there. I think devs should stop progressing and start bugfix.
