[HUB] Creating a Template project throws a decompression failure error when the project path exceeds 75 characters

--

-

How to reproduce:
1. Open Unity Hub
2. Create a new project
3. Select one of the templates(LWRP/HDRP/3D With Extras)
4. Select such a path, that would exceed 75 characters

Expected result: a new project is created successfully
Actual result: a 'Failed to resolve project template' error is thrown

Reproducible with: 2019.1.0a10, 2019.1.14f1, 2019.2.0f1, 2019.3.0a11
Not reproducible with: 2017.4.31f1, 2018.4.5f1, 2019.1.0a9(Hub not yet integrated)
Tested with Unity Hub: 2.0.4

Notes:
The following paths were tested:
1)
- Project name: A
- Project location: C:\AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
2)
- Project name: New Unity Project55555
- Project location: C:\Workspace\Test\Project\Unity\Additional Packages\T

Both cases have 76 characters in total after combining the project name with project location. Reducing this to 75 characters does not reproduce the issue

  1. Resolution Note (2020.1.X):

Low priority defect and unlikely to be fixed for the near future.

Had students shorten their file path and STILL does not resolve. We removed project, removed the old files, and restarted our computers. NONE of those fixed the problem. The file path was only 10 characters long.

Downloaded version 2021.3.27f1 (version needed for the 2D platformer tutorial)

    Any other resolves?

I love teaching Unity for game making but.. My students will be so happy when I'll tell them that the issue happened because of a too long path :/

The solution to this problem is to create new projects on the root directory and keep the project name short. So instead of "C:\User\admin\Documents\A Very Long Project Name Here" use "C:\Project1"

amritkhanna what does that have to do with Unity?

I am having the same issue,
I am on a school laptop and the path names are quite long the way the drives set up including my schools full name in the path. Super annoying to try to figure out and fix when you're a student learning a new program and can't even make a new template.
    Changing the directory fixes this.
