This really should not happen.
Trees should be replaced by quads, or sprites, or something like that, and they should keep the same angle with the floor, not relative to the camera.

This isn't just trees. It's all billboards, including particles. And it's evidently not just VR. It's just more noticeable. Searching the forums reveals that this seems to have been happening for years and that no one is actively working on it. Closest I've seen is that "there is someone working on a new terrain system". The terrain system has nothing to do with the billboard bug. Trees are just a more noticeable symptom of the billboard orientation in general.

The same thing happens with leave-billboards (e.g. Speedtree broadleaf) of some trees, it would be nice, if this could be fixed also along with this problem.

You can enlarge the billboard distance. If you use terrain trees, simply click on the terrain, and go into the settings tab of the terrain component. Then you can set "billboard start" to 500 or whatever you want. However this may have big impact to the performance, so be careful.
