How to reproduce:

1. Open attached project
2. Open scene Test.unity
3. Play the scene
- Note that two spheres are instantiated, with a shader attached
4. Select any sphere and modify its material (tick the Test Variant checkbox)
- Note that the sphere doesn't change colour
- Creating a new material and assigning the Custom/TestVariants shader to it, then ticking the checkbox causes the material to turn red properly
