Scene view "show mips" view mode is broken, gives a "Shader error in 'Hidden/Scene View Show Mips': Temporary register limit of 8 exceeded; 11 registers needed to compile program"

    This happens when writing a simple shader. I wrote a flat colour shader and the problem did not occur, but when I started to write a lambert shader (following a tutorial), I started seeing this exact error and it has not stopped, and can be cleared from the console but reappears every time I recompile the shader.
