1) Download the attached project
2) Open 30HzSample scene
3) go to the lighting window and press bake

Scene will bake with out error
Actual Behavior:
the follwing error is shown and light baking never finishes

Doesn't work in 5.6+ either. I get a 'Baking Resources' job failed with error code: 3 ('Failed reading Bake Input System file.'). I've been trying to get light baking to work since the initial release of 5 and it's never worked without tons of issues. I followed the suggestion of clearing the GI cache , let the light bake run overnight and still get the same error above. I stripped the level down to one single object that I keep cutting into smaller and smaller pieces as others have suggested. I have a top of the line rig with 32 gig of memory and virtually unlimited HD space. Doesn't work , will never work. Between "features" not working and constant bombardment of random crashes loosing hours and hours of work...... Frustration turning into rage.

Its no fixed. in Unity 5.5.3p3 i have this issue to. Reducing the computation requeriments is possible to have the bake, but this is no solution and we bake and bake to find the optimal relation between our requeriments and the issue.
The clusters problem with large distances its still present too in this version.
Unity its the best tool but I already had my nails a long time ago, now I'm eating my elbows. :)

This isn't fixed. It persists in to 5.6.1. The GI cache being stale was a related issue but not the only one with the final gather of baking lightmaps.

This error in 5.6.0f1 too :(
After Windows show error pop-up "No more free memory, please close JobProcess", Unity print in editor console this error.
JobProcess takes about 4.5GB RAM each (two processes = 9GB in total). My PC has 10GB RAM.
!! Solution: Changed Lightmap Size from 2048 to 512 !!

This a problem in 5.5.0f3.
And clearing the cache doesn't help.
