Make sure you can actually open the file in Finder. I had an issue where my 'git clone' pulled down a .PNG and I tried adding it as an "AR Placement Indicator.png" asset and it failed with this same error message but the file was actually corrupt. Not sure if that's everyone's experience or not, but was a simple oversight.

Totally happening in unity 2019 now, this is so lame, the issue I have is when creating .png images from camera rendertextures it fails, and Unity says they "Won't Fix" their broken editor. And who says "Won't Fix" anyways? That's exactly the same as saying "We just don't give a f**k about you".
