The standard material "Sprites-Diffuse" is missing from new projects
Start a new project (for kicks, make the project a "2D" project in editor settings as the "New Project Wizard Set Up" button is broken).
Import a new image as a "Texture Type: Sprite".
Try changing the "Sprites-Default" materials (which ignores lighting" to "Sprites-Diffuse" which allows Sprites to be lit in the scene by lights.
This is a material used by 2D and uGUI.
