Editor's performance drops when recording with Recorder and VP8

Package: Recorder

-

Reproduction steps:
1. Open the attached “Looping fractals” Project
2. Open the “Assets/Scenes/Level1-CutScene2.unity” Scene
3. In the top menu select Window > General > Recorder > Recorder Window
4. Enter the Play Mode
5. In the Recorder Window press the “START RECORDING” Button

Expected result: Recording does not impact the Editor’s performance significantly
Actual result: Game View drops to a few FPS and the whole Editor slows down

Reproducible with: 3.0.3 (2020.3.47f1, 2021.3.22f1), 4.0.0 (2022.2.15f1, 2023.1.0b12, 2023.2.0a10)

Reproducible on: Intel MacOS 13.3

  1. Resolution Note:

Hi, thank you for the report.

The lastest Unity 2021.3 (anything above Unity 2021.3.30) should run slightly better with VP8 encoding. There was a performance issue that got improved. That being said, our implementation of the VP8 encoder is not as performant as if you were using the H.264 encoder for example and is not ideal for realtime use. If you are not tied to the VP8 format and if you need to run the export at more performance framerate, you can try to export with H.264 instead. In the Movie Recorder > Format > Media File Format, select "H.264 MP4". A third party software can then be used to transcode the output file to the format of your choice.
